Surprising to a lot of us is that it’s not just restricted to our teens! Adult acne problems are very common and are completely treatable. All it comes down to is finding the right balance in your diet and lifestyle, because good skin comes from the inside as much as from the outside.
What is Acne?
Now technically; Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. It often causes whiteheads, blackheads or pimples, and usually appears on the face, forehead and upper body. Excess oil is often produced from within, from your sebaceous glands in your skin and is called sebum. These glands are at the mercy of your hormones and tend to particularly affect women in periods of change, such as puberty and menopause. However, modern diets and medicines mean that our hormones, across all genders, are in a spiral at any given time in our lives.
Treatments for acne are found both topically (on the skin) and internally (in the body). Finding the balance of both treatments that’s right for you is truly the best solution for this frustrating problem, but it doesn’t need to take a lot of effort! It especially doesn’t need to involve any chemical nasties – you just need the right, natural products.

ACV – Apple Cider Vinegar is a hero in the Acne treatment game. Holding a combination of acids that science has proven to kill bacteria types found in acne, as well as naturally being a source of vitamins B1, B2, and B6 and C. It also contains the minerals sodium, phosphorous, potassium, calcium, iron, and magnesium.
HONEY – A natural antibacterial, honey for cleansing the skin is a gentle and non0toxic way to clean the dirt and excess oil from you skin. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which is why you see it as a common ingredient in calming treatments!
TEA TREE OIL – Another antibacterial, TTO is an essential oil derived from a Native Australian plant and is a popular ingredient in most commercial and home treatments for Acne, being even more effective than some popular synthetic ingredients like benzoyl peroxide. It’s antimicrobial properties not only helps clear acne build up, it also makes it harder for breakouts to reappear.
GREEN TEA – Green Tea is a known gem in the world of natural remedies. It’s extreme levels of antioxidants, protecting you from free radicals, makes it a popular ingredient for overall health. But importantly, and lesser known is its very high levels of Catechins. Catechins are compounds that are fantastic anti-inflammatories!
ALOE VERA – A popular treatment for sun burns, but so much more! A triple threat as an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant rich plant, aloe vera gel is fantastic not just for treating a current breakout, but also is known to help boost collagen and speed up the repair of acne scarring. Knowing all this is great, but it’s important to know how to use them! First, if you don’t already know, we strongly recommend talking to a skin specialist to find out about your skin type. Sensitive or Normal. Dry or Oily. Maybe even combination. A common misconception is that having excess oil on your skin means you have oily skin. A specialist looks deeper than your surface level skin and finds out what’s going on underneath. When you know these details, it helps you find the best options for a skin care routine that will clear and protect your skin.
What is a good skincare routine?
Because everyone is different in skin types and environments, there is no definitive routine for everyone; you do need to experiment, research and just generally take the time to practice and notice how your skin behaves. However, listed below is a very general and widely accepted routine that will improve the quality of your skin and protect it for the long term.
For a daily routine, you should look at minimum, three steps; cleanse, tone and moisturise. The right cleanser should be gentle enough to use every day, but thorough at getting rid of dirt, grease and toxins. Avoid using a scrub daily (even if it’s tempting) as that can over do the job, stripping too much moisture from your skin and causing trauma to your pores, making them more prone the getting infected and inflamed. A scrub should at most be used twice a week. Maybe after a particularly big session at the gym, or a full day outside! Next, a toner is great at calming down the skin after rubbing it clean with hot water and the cleanser. It helps close up your pores and prepares it better for absorbing the right nutrients from your moisturiser that you’re about to apply! Your moisturiser is so important to get right, as not only does it prevent your skin from over producing oil itself, it can boost a healthy level of collagen and elasticity, keeping it bright and less prone to wrinkles!
